Sekouba Bambino Diabate ‘Sekouba Barna’

Guinean superstar Sekouba ‘Bambino’ Diabate has been through many different styles and guises over the last 30 years, but in all that time he has remained at the forefront of the music scene in his native Guinea. Playing with the band Bembeya Jazz in the 80s, joining African Salsa super group Africando in the 90s and the mounting a solo career, the main reason for his success is his tremendous voice, that sets him apart from any of his¬†contemporaries.

This month, he released the album ‘The Griot’s Craft’ (he descends from a long line of Mande region girots – a well respected West African historian/poet/storyteller/ singer known locally as a jeli) which is a ‘stripped-back’ affair the only way they can in West Africa – featuring 15 musicians, but all acoustic and wonderfully recorded to portray the rhythms and sounds of Guinean traditional music.
