I could have picked any track off Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars’ album ‘Radio Salone’, it is that good. A band of refugees who fled Sierra Leone during the civil war and formed in Guinea, the All Stars returned to Freetown in 2004 to embark on a successful career with two albums and a documentary released in quick succession. Their third album ‘Radio Salone’ was a welcomed departure from their reggae sound, using more traditional African rhythms and melodies – the All Stars have found the perfect balance here… teaming up with American producer Victor Axelrod (Antibalas) was a wise choice.
‘Mother (In Law)’ was the first single from the album and one that shows off the punchy horn section and melodic guitar riffs that appear throughout ‘Radio Salone’. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the end of the war in Sierra Leone, and this album is the perfect way to celebrate.
