Best Tunes of 2012: No 5 Roberto Fonseca ‘Bibisa’

Not only was 2012 Roberto Fonseca’s break out year, it was also the year that Malian singer Fatoumata Diawara’s album ‘Fatou’ went global so that makes ‘Bibisa’ a double whammy of world music and a must-have on this list. Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca is only 37 years old but plays the piano as though he has decades of experience – he truly is a phenomenon and even from a country that has spawn many great musicians, he somehow stands out.

Inspired by the success of the Buena Vista Social Club super-collaboration AfroCubism in 2011, Roberto Fonseca carries on the relationship between Mali and Cuba on his outstanding album ‘Yo’, bringing together musicians Baba Sissoko, Sekou Kouyate and Fatoumata Diawara. They all perform on ‘Bibisa’ to create one of the most beautiful sounds of 2012: Fatoumata’s sweet voice and Fonseca’s flickering piano blending seamlessly with Sissoko’s n’goni and Kouyate’s kora – it is music from the heavens:
