Even though Mali has been in turmoil for a long time, the country still manages to churn out some outstanding music. Rokia Traoré is set to release her new album ‘Beautiful Africa’ on April 9th via Nonsuch Records. Her last album ‘Tchamantché’ was a critical success and she now plans to build on that with a new record and tour scheduled this spring and summer (she’s already signed on to play WOMAD and Glastonbury).
Rokia was bought up in the Bambara ethnic group (the language with which she sings as well as English and French), but being the daughter of a diplomat she managed to travel a lot to US, Europe and the Middle East so her music draws from a wide range of traditions.
