Various Artists ‘The Rough Guide To African Disco’

Seeing as though this is my blog and I can make my own rules, I’m going craaaazy today and going to give you THREE tracks – and they aren’t even new! This is to celebrate the release of an excellent new album in the The Rough Guide series: ‘African Disco’. The 1970’s was a time when disco music was thriving on the African continent, music that was made with one purpose… make you dance. Artists were creating their own unique sound using the elements of disco music and mixing it with the rhythmic pulse of African funk, soul and the electrifying vibes of highlife, soukous and Afrobeat.

This compilation brings together a whole host of artists from all over Africa including Osibisa, Tony Allen, Mango Groove, Pat Thomas, The Lijadu Sisters and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. The bonus album is a re-issue of ‘Soul On Fire’ by Maloko a brilliant collection of works by Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding and James Brown in a soukous style that you can’t not smile too. Here are a few highlights, enjoy the sun!
