Many people didn’t realise Har Mar had this kind of potential. Ever since his debut album ‘Har Mar Superstar’ way back in 2000, Sean Tillmann’s finest creation has given his fans highly sexual, over-the-top soul delivered with a straight face and a tongue-in-cheek sense of irony (and quite often topless!). After a break of over four years, the singer is back with what is probably his most serious album. On ‘Bye Bye 17’ out last month on Cult Records, Tillman employs a live band and has moved into the 60’s soul of James Brown and The Temptations – it’s a really enjoyable listen full of soaring horns and Rhodes keys.
Some tracks work brilliantly, especially the opener ‘Lady, You Shot Me’ – a Motown-inspired ditty that showcases his surprisingly great vocals. The dancing is still there in the video but it’s definitely a much classier affair than we’re used to from him.
