Oh what a treat we have today. Hurrah For The Riff Raff are a folk band based in New Orleans and they really deserve a wider following. They are led by singer Alynda lee Segarra who ran away from her home in New York at the age of 17 and somehow ended up in The Big Easy and founded the band. After a few of self-released records, last year they released the outstanding album ‘Look Out Mama’ on their own label Born to Win Records and it was a real game changer: loved by critics, gained them as spot at SXSW and a highly anticipated tour this summer.
“My Dearest Darkest Neighbor” is an album of covers they’ve played and recorded over the years and has just been officially released by Mod Mobilian Records/This Is American Music. As singer Alynda describes it: “These are my attempts at the folk tradition of writing a song where someone else left off. I try to learn from the greats. These are soul songs, let’s sing them together.”
It’s a great collection that shows off Alynda’s brilliant vocals on songs by Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, Lucinda Williams, Hank Williams, Leadbelly and the track featured here today: ‘My Sweet Lord’ by George Harrison. Enjoy!
