This has been a long time coming. Derrick Hodge is a musician who’s already had a remarkable career on an instrument is not normally the most talked about in the band set-up… the bass guitar. Hailing from just outside Philadelphia, Hodge was still studying jazz at Temple when he started making a name for his bass skills putting in some studio time with the likes of Philly legends Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild and Floetry. Recently he’s been part of the Grammy award-winning group Robert Glasper Experiment and played with Maxwell and jazz trumpeter Terence Blanchard – a man truly at the top of his game.
Last week he finally released his debut solo record ‘Live Today’ which features an array of musicians that will make a jazz and R&B fan’s mouth water: singer-guitarist Alan Hampton, Robert Glasper, Casey Benjamin, drummers Marc Colenburg and Chris Dave, keyboardists James Poyser and Aaron Parks, saxophonist Marcus Strickland, trumpeter Keyon Harrold, and the American String Quartet. Out on Blue Note, Hodge has put together jazz, R&B, gospel, classical and hip-hop as explored on the title track, a collaboration with rapper Common. Enjoy his bass work on this one along with Common usual high quality ramblings:
